Summer project: 1 becomes 2: Script ideas

I've kinda gone too ahead with designing characters that I've forgotten to put some of my script ideas! Sorry!! I like to have this in the style of Norman McLaren's where the art/ visuals are following to a beat or chord which shapes, symbols etc. changes. So here are some of my ideas for a possible script.

Idea 1:
A montage series of tribal images starting from animals to tribal people which in-between these, shapes form and changes in the process.

Idea 2:

Random shapes morphing and intertwining each other in a tribal like style following the beats of the music.

Idea 3:

Similar to idea 2, symbols representing tribes are seen changing from one form to another along to the beats and chords of the soundscape.

Summer project: 1 becomes 2: Tiki face designs 1

Based on my influence maps, I've came up with some designs for my soundscape interpretation. I've decided to put these designs in front of a black backdrop this time to see whether it can be eye-catching. Designs 1 and 2 were practice designs in recreating an African/ aboriginal/ tiki style, but out of all at the moment I'm liking design 6 and 8.

Summer project: 1 becomes 2- More influences

After having some technical difficulties, I'm finally back online!! :D So to make up for the missing few days/ weeks I've looked into more research into the kind of art style that I like to use for my music interpretation.
I've looked at the different shapes and patterns that make up the faces in tiki style and I've also looked at the colours, shapes and patterns used in UV body art to help me create a neon tiki styled face.

Summer project: 1 becomes 2: Influence map

After taking a quite a long hiatus from being on the blog, I think its about time I got focussed on the summer project. Based on some small influences on my first summer project post, I've piled them all up into an influence map. I felt that from listening to soundscape 3 gave me the idea of tribal like art styles, so I went to look at some Aztec, Aboriginal and African tribal art since these mostly contains simple shapes, bright colours and patterns. 

1 becomes 2 Summer Project: Let the fun start!!

Two weeks ago, during our fourth week of the Commission unit, we were given a brief on what this summer project might have in store for us especially with the dreaded blue box. This time, only given a short piece of music we would have to "interpret" this into a animation sequence. This can be in a range of art styles from Norman McLaren's work to Fantasia style.
So picking out from the box, I've picked out "Soundscape 3". This is quite an interesting piece after hearing it during the preview in the brief. Sounding quite exotic, it reminds me of aboriginal tribes with their bright colours.

After hearing this piece, I thoguth it would be a good idea to post up some videos of what this music piece reminds me of.


The beginning of the piece strongly reminds me of the music from The Lion King- Be Prepared





The vibrant strong coloured tikki masks from The Princess and the Frog





I could see this being in the style of Norman McLaren with the lines/ shapes forming tikki style.

Though its early stages but these are just first thought initial ideas!

Summer project design: refined

Since my internet's fixed, I can now upload the refined final images design. I have designed these using the graphics tablet and Photoshop.

The building structure was done using various paintbrush styles and experimentations with them. I've decided to use wood as it would suit well with the design

The Machinery robot design was added with pink and purple tones to give it the female charcter.The use of grey tones was also to give the character some "robotic"look to it.

Living form design

The living form design was my best out of all the designs, I've experimented on whether to give the design some feathers but felt that it would be better off without them. I've also felt that either blues, greys or white colours would give the character to suit its natural sky surroundings.

101 concept designs-living forms and machinery

This group I personally think is my strongest of all, as the living form is based on some parts of the ornament vase along with the lines and textures, giving it a seal/ bird hybrid. At first, the machinery was quite difficult to come up ideas until I looked at some of my other ideas of machinery upside down and decided to transform it into a humanoid form. Its based on a light bulb and engine parts.

Before starting the course, we had to come up with 101 concept designs using pictures provided and choose 3 designs under each heading: structures, living forms and machinery.

This piece is based on a round display ornament vase turned upside down with the back of high heels.
