Speed Painting #12: "A very Jules Verne Christmas"

Couldn't help but think back to one of my favourite units that I did last year, so I went back and drew up the lava cave looking out to the frozen mushrooms. Really got stuck into this image and tried to use the techniques that I've learnt from last year into this quick image but this time it took me 45 mins to do. :D

Disk Art for Unit 2: Space

Here is my disk art for my submission disk and the front cover. I've added one of my final concept images and created a combination of my other 2 extracts (forest of mushrooms and the shore) together to form one image and blending the two together as the river/lava fuses. The results of this looks interesting but quite fun to create it.

Extract 1: The Caves Final Concept art

The Cave Final Concept Art
Here is the final concept art for Extract 1's The Caves. I am extremely happy with this result as I felt that this is the image that I've developed on the most.At first the image is all red but after forgetting that the extract mentions cold and hot temperatures in one place I felt that I should develop on this to show both temperatures in one image. This worked well using blue lighting to represent the cold and let the viewer to decide where it comes from and such. I am really happy the way the lava turned out, using the brushes and adding emboss effects on the rocks floating in the lava. I've also added some steam/smoke/mist into the image to depict the hotness of the area. Overall I am really happy with this turnout!! ^_^

Extract 2: Forest of Mushrooms Final Concept art

Final Concept Art
Here is my final concept art for Extract 2's The Forest of Mushrooms. Personally this was a hard piece to come up with as a forest is shrouded and showing space in this seemed difficult for me. After many tryouts, I have managed to successfully come up with this idea and develop this by using different brushes as well as getting the general idea of lighting from the plasticine mushrooms experiment. Development on this image are on the grass lighting as well as rock surfaces and cliff faces and added a figure in to again, show the scale and depth of these mushrooms. Overall I'm very happy with the result!! ^_^

Extract 3: The Shore Final Concept Art

Final Concept Art
Here is my final concept art for Extract 3's The Shore. I'm very pleased with the result as I felt that I have made an image that looks interesting comparing to the other thumbnails for this extract. I've made some slight changes to the image like extending the sea a little further back and add more dinosaur bones along with a directional sunlight to help create more depth to the image. A figure is put in the image, but was changed to stand closer to the dinosaur skull to help create the scale between man and dinosaur bones. I'm very happy with the result of the sky especailly how the clouds had turned out using the cloud brush tool as previous experiements with it didn't go as well as planned. But apart from all that I'm very happy with the result!! ^_^

Unit 2: Space- AJttCotE: The Shore Update

Without the texture brush but added a rock on the right

added some other bits of bones, texture brush and moved the sea

Re-sharpen the layers
Using the feedback from the previous post, I've developed these images so far, I thought that they weren't showing enough space and so moved the sea slightly back and the little man as well to show the scale differences easier. I've also added some extra bones and played around with a texture brush but it seems to be too distracting. Feedback and advice would be loved!! :D

Unit 2: Space- AJttCotE: THe Shore

Here is a thumbnail for Extract 3's the shore. I think this piece works well as it shows the scale of the dinosaur skulls comparing to the Little figure as well as the space of the shore too. I'm quite happy the way the bones have turned out especially ones from and behind the water. Any feedback or advice would be much loved!! ^_^

Feedback plz!! Unit 2: Space- AJttCotE: Extract 1 photoshop thumb update

Added blue tint around the cave

Taking on the advice feedback from Nat, I've tried to add in some blue tints around the darker rocks and on the right of the rock cliff as well as the far end of the lava path as a way of showing cold temperatures within the cave as well as hot lava. So far, adding these looks well but I'm not sure to keep the blue on the right as it seems to have made the look smaller. Help and feedback would be much loved at this panicky time!! ^_^

Update: added blue tint on the darker rocks and on the right of the cave

added blue tint at the back of the cave

Unit 2: Space- AJttCotE: Extract 1 photoshop thumb

without smoke
added smoke
Working on a thumbnail that I've did previously onto Photoshop in class yesterday, I was able to come up with this image. I was really happy the way it turned out especailly the rocks at the bottom right as I'd spent more time in recreating the look and effect. Originally I had a white spot at the end of the lava trail but this was changed as there is no sunlight or other light sources except the lava itself.

To make it look like its in a cave, I've added some smoke to create the effect of extreme hot lava. But this creates a faded colour to the image and blocks out most detail. Another problem is that the whole cave is red, but I'd then I've forgotton about the whole hot/cold in one place idea. This I'm not sure whether to drop the idea or not as it is interesting to have both temperatures in one area or that it is more interesting and important to focus on one instead.

Added blue tint but without smoke
So I've added some blue tint at the end of the cave to show the path and the cold areas. But I don't think this works well as the heat of the lava is more hotter and so reaching to the cold area should be a slightly different colour.

Added blue colours at back with smoke

Unit 2: Space- AJttCotE: Extract 2 photoshop thumbs

Here is another thumbnail for extract 2, I thought about the use of perspective and this can be made to show the height between man and mushroom. I've added in a figure as a way to depict this easier. I've also experimented different brushes to create the trees and grass effects which works well in particular the top left corner.

Here is another early thumbnail I've created, I've decided that this image is looking slightly down at the mushrooms from a high cliff showing the mushroom and its tiny mushrooms spouting from it at the top.

Unit 2: Space- AJttCotE: Shore thumbnails

added with blood
flipped horizontal
After having helpful advice from TutorPhil yesterday, I've managed to come up with another thumbnail done on Photoshop. I took the idea of having enlarged bones along with some others in the background and adding a little figure to show the scale of the bones. Though doing this, I felt that the ribcage in the foreground might have overtook the view a little too much as it slightly blocks the view in the background.
I did thought about whether to add some blood or not in the image and so experimented with it. Though it adds colour to the image, it does stand out from its previous image when its just "clean" bones. I've also flipped the image around to see which side of view works best but both works well.

This thumbnail was done before talking to TutorPhil and as you can see, the skeleton bones are too small. The view looks dull as at the start this was going to be like a cave like structure with a bright light coming from the left. This didn't seemed to work and after having the advice I felt that I can come up with something much better than this.

Unit 2: Space- AJttCotE: Shore and mushroom forest thumbs

More thumbnails focussing on Extract 2 and 3. Though I felt that when doing these, there is repitition going within the thumbnails and so I've also got some advice from TutorPhil about how things should be seen as large and from different perspectives, so more thumbnails coming up next!! ^_^  But before, I felt that when doing extract 2's thumbnails, there is some sort of repitition of the tunnel idea and the mushrooms being in a shrouded area. So to try and show space, I've experimented with the perceptions and the placement of the mushrooms.

Then I've did some extract 3 thumbnails, again in different perspectives and placements of objects. However I did realised that every thumbnail that I've drawn for extract 3, all the dinosaur bones on the ground are small rather being large. This is a habit that needs changed for the upcoming last few thumbnails. I've also thought about shuold the shore be shown inside a cavern/ cave or out in the open air but felt it'll look better with the coloured sunset in the open air.

Unit 2: Space- AJttCotE: the shore thumbs

Had another practice at Photoshop only this time creating another thumbnail for the Extract 3's shore. This is a bit complicated as the book goes in the lines of the characters going back to where they'd ended up in Extract 2 only from a different perspective. It also mentions a dinosaur graveyard being there but the rest is that they're (the characters) are along the shores. Using this information, I've created another thumbnail for this. At the moment I've only added some textures to the cliffs and some colours to the background as part of an experiment. So far the background colour looks well but I've still need to work on the textures so that they blend in as a cliff. I've also added some dinosaur bones as the extract mentions mostly T-rex and mastodon's skeletons.

Unit 2: Space- AJttCotE: more mushroom forest thmbs

Fig 1: no light

More thumbnail and photoshop practice on the mushroom forest designs. Focusing on the lighting and where the light touches, I've decided to add some light rays to show the directional light coming from the right. Fig 1 just shows the image without light added but the results of it looks dull, Fig 2 has a single layer of light, giving the image some bit of lighter colour. At this point, I find that Fig 3 looks over the top with the light rays but comparing to Fig 2, it doesn't contain as much bright rays than its later version. At the moment, I've added some colours onto the image as shown in Fig 4 but does not contain any directional light yet.
