Sketches: 19/01/2016

I've made a head start on these studies sometime last year and had left them in the backburner for quite a while until within these days I've decided to work on where I've left off. Other than studying these in terms of colour and anatomy, I've also attempted to experiment around with various brushes. ^_^

Character Design Project: Character Action Scenes

Not sure would it still count as I've decided to display it in a minimalist tapestry way, inspired by "The Living Lines Library" on "The Rise of The Guardians", still overall Im really pleased with the result it turned out. ^_^

Speed Painting Challenge #4: When Good Toys Turn Bad...'

Had a lot of fun doing this one but ran out of time!! Took me 40mins but wanted to add more toys. This one is taken from under the bed where a torch light is shown from behind, the barbie doll is slightly in a distorted pose that will need fixing. Couldn't help but add a bad my little pony in!!  :D

Character Design Project: Early concept art

A previous early concept art I've made of the dragon sidekick.

Speed painting challenge #2: Jack Frost's Asylum For Malcontent Snowmen

Feel like doing this in a more cartoony way so here's my interpretation for today's theme :Jack Frost's Asylum For Malcontent Snowmen. This one took me 1 hour to draw and the bottom image which is pretty much a snowman being watched via a cctv camera in his room, this one took me 30 mins.

speed painting!!

I thought it might be fun to join in the speed painting craze that everyone's been doing on their blogs. Its also a good time for me to brush up and free up my painting skills especially using different brushes on Photoshop. So I've drawn up these two images, the top image was done within 40 mins and the last image which I'm happy it turned out well was done within an hour. ^_^

Character Design Project: Photoshop Alien thumbnail

Today after taking on Photoshop Phil's advice on getting the proportions right and making the character in 3/4 view full. I focused on creating another alien thumb but this time trying to add the viking traits like big build and muscles etc into them. I've created this guy, which looks a bit "The Predator" thing, first this was done without Pen pressure added and later refined with the Pen pressure on.

refined- Pen pressure added and without thick lines

Character Design Project: First drawings

Today, I felt a bit lost as to how or where to start this project so I went to see Photoshop Phil today for some advice. I wasn't sure whether to have the two genres meshed together or have them as separate which would either mean Vikings are heroes and Aliens are bad or the other way round. I thought it would be interesting to see the two genres meshed together, so I was advised to start on pen and paper and draw out ideas for each genre and then later decide what can be meshed together and what not. I also asked how to change my cartoon style as I wanted to explore and tryout to draw something in a realistic way. Focusing on my previous alien drawing, I restarted it on a fresh slate and used the advice and tips from Photoshop Phil to recreate it only in a realistic style. I also thought about looking at different anatomies of animals to help me create an alien as to avoid falling into the "generic alien" area. I'm really happy in being able to "break free" of the cartoony style and recreating a previous drawing into a realistic way. Hopefully I'll be able to use this in this project!! Anyway, here are the drawings from today before meeting with Photoshop Phil and after (which also includes an image of combined parts to form an alien on the top right!) Influence maps will come. ^_^

The improved realistic version! ^_^

Unit 4: Storytelling- Small fish refinements

Small fish refinement
Here I have made refinements to the small fish. Using the feedback, I've tried to mix in designs 4 and 10 together. I've taken number 10's body structure, a bit of its cheeks and mouth before adding number 4's eyes and refining them. Let me know what yous think!! ^_^

Unit 4: Storytelling- Small fish silhouettes

Here are more silhouette designs for my small fish character to suit with the big fish. I've tried experimenting with the structure and faces to show he's not afraid of the big fish. So far I am liking number 10 because of the facial expression and the stance he's in.

Unit 4: Storytelling- Character final concept designs?

Here are the chosen final designs for the big fish alongside with the small fish in the hotel scene. I’ve used colour designs 4 and 11 for the big fish and the small fish with the suit on. I’ve also added an image of it without the suit to see would it appear better with or without it- Feedback on this would be appreciated and loved!! ^_^
1) Big fish based on colour test 11
2) Big fish based on colour test 11 with small fish without suit
 3) Big fish based on colour test 4 with small fish without suit
4) Big fish based on colour test 4 with small fish wearing suit

Unit 4: Storytelling- Concept designs

Here are some concept designs for my fish hotel scenes. The first image is of the hotel taken from outside for the beginning of my animation. The second is where most of the action takes place with the big fish and small fish fighting for to be first. I’m really happy with the outcome of the first image as I feel that the blues and the rock textures worked well. But with the second image I was quite happy with it at first but realised that I’ve left the window. I’ve added it in only to have alot of the width image shrink to fit the 16:9 ratio.

Unit 4: Big fish Colour tests

Here is some colour samples for the big arrogant fish character. So far I'm liking colour figures 11 and 12 with the dark colours that would go well for a bad character.
